Side effects that can occur with antacids include constipation due to aluminum content, fluid retention due to sodium bicarbonate content and slow labor due to magnesium content. There are other prescription medications that your doctor can give you to relieve your acid reflux but as with any medication or treatment the health and safety of the baby is the most important thing to consider.
In more severe cases of acid reflux during pregnancy, GERD can occur and that will require some form of medication or alternative herbal treatment which you can find through a search on the Internet or by insisting that your doctor find alternative ways to relieve your acid reflux. Keep in mind that the foods you eat and the beverages you drink can worsen acid reflux and some of these foods must be avoided if you are to handle this issue. Spicy foods, milk, coffee, citrus fruits and sodas will instigate acid reflux and must be avoided if you are to alleviate your symptoms. Foods like breads, pasta and rice will help to bind stomach acid and keep it from coming up on you. These few hints should help you to avoid or relieve acid reflux during pregnancy and keep you more comfortable.
